Philip Coppel is an experienced trial lawyer with a broad practice covering all aspects of public and commercial law. He came to the English Bar in 1994, having spent 3 years in the commercial litigation department of a large firm of City Solicitors. He previously practised in Australia.
Coppel's public law practice includes judicial review and tribunal work, planning and environmental law, excise and revenue matters. Within local government law, his practice includes highways, elections and rating disputes.
Philip Coppel regularly acts for and against public authorities, including Central Government departments and bodies, local authorities and statutory agencies.

Mr Coppel has published extensively. His Information Rights, the third edition of which was published by Hart Publishing in 2010, gives an authoritative analysis of all rights of access to government-held information in the United Kingdom. Mr Coppel has also contributed to several volumes of Atkins' Court Forms, including those dealing with evidence, elections and economic torts (the last forthcoming).
